COACH BILL SNYDER

When Bill Snyder arrived at Kansas State ten years ago to begin rebuilding the school’s football program, to say the job ahead of him was a formidable one would have been an understatement. The record that Coach Snyder inherited was 75-230-4, from 1960 to 1988 in home attendance had fallen from a high of 38,002 in 1970 to 20,975 in 1988, the year before he arrived. To succeed would take a person with a plan and the perseverance to stick with it.

It couldn’t be about wins and losses, initially. It had to be about fundamentals and just plain getting better. There had to be focus. The strategy was simplicity itself: “What are out goals today?” This became the framework for improvement. “We tried to have viable ways that we could show a young guy we were getting better,” Coach Snyder said. “Even though we went out and they pulverized us, we made some progress. Individually, a guy blocked a little better or he ran a little bit better. Some of those things were all we had to hold on to.”

What Coach Snyder has accomplished can be measured in consistency. The Wildcats have won nine or more games in each of the last six seasons, a feat equaled only by Nebraska, Ohio State, Penn State, Florida and Florida State. The Team has appeared in six consecutive bowl games. They are now sold out in season tickets and have exceeded the capacity of KSU Stadium every game the last three seasons.

In his 10th season at Kansas State, Coach Snyder guided the Wildcats to an 11-0 regular season mark in 1998 and a No. 3 standing in the Bowl Championship Series Poll, close to perfection. He was rewarded with well deserved national recognition by being selected The Associated Press’ College Coach of the Year.

Although Coach Snyder gets much of the credit - and should - he knows he is only a part of the equation. “It’s our coaches, and the support people around,” says Snyder. “It’s players and other people. One guy couldn’t do this. All together we have done an acceptable job.”

“As long as I am wanted and we are effective in doing what we are doing, and as long as we can have an impact with young people, I will keep doing it.”

The artist has chosen to depict Coach Snyder along with his trademark headset.
