COACH TOM OSBORNEPlain and simple, Tom Osborne will be remembered for one of the most remarkable coaching careers in the annals of college football. Taking the reigns from the mythical Bob Devaney in 1973, Tom began his career at age 35 with no coaching experience! The weight of Nebraska was on his shoulders and nothing short of perfection would fulfill the high expectations of Cornhusker fans. His professional life as head coach began fittingly on September 8, 1973, with a 40-13 drubbing of then 10th ranked UCLA. The train was still on the track. The model of consistency, he averaged over 10 wins per season and guided the Big Red to 13 Conference Championships and 3 National titles. He coached 55 first-team All-Americans and 46 of Nebraskas 52 first-team Academic All-Americans, far more than any other football coach ever has. In 25 seasons, he won 255 gamesmore than any other football coach did over such a span. His last five seasons mirrored the admonishment he often gave his players in locker room speeches, to get stronger as the game progresses and dominate the 4th quarter, going 60-3, better than any other coach in history over 5 seasons. In the ultimate send-off, Toms final Huskers team capped off this incredible coaching career with the 3rd National title and a perfect 13-0 season. Tom Osbornethe quiet man from Hastings with a genius for footballamassed a record of success that places him among a select few at the pinnacle of the college game. His reputation will only grow with each passing year. The fans know it. The players live it. Every time a player steps onto the field he has to perform. You put on that red uniform and you know its something special. The sustained excellence that Nebraska achieves is rare. I wish I could say something quotable or interesting about it, but I cant, says Osborne. We have a really good work ethic, very goal oriented players.... Although winning at Nebraska is serious business; it is tradition and sense of commitment that the artist conveys in this painting. This uniscapes limited edition print has been personally approved and hand signed by the artist and Coach Tom Osborne. Go Back Home |
